GEORGE LOIS
With 15 years in the magazine design game, I’ve done it all—from print to digital, and worked with all sorts of audiences and styles, including white labeling for a variety of clients. Whether it’s setting up systems, crafting complete design styles or continuing an established publication, I’ve got you covered. Magazine design has taught me to be quick on my feet, versatile, and a natural problem solver. Plus, I’ve learned that solid planning, efficient systems, and open communication are key.
Every month I would avidly wait for the new issue that the local news agent held for me. I insisted on going in as even then I loved the smell of all that paper and ink. Mum would get her craft mag and the Woman’s Day, for me the holy grail…. Girlfriend magazine. My connection to a world I aspired to. As the pile grew, they were with me through my formative years.
As grown-ups we still crave new information, connection and a sense of belonging. Or even just the promise of some downtime in a busy world. Magazines are many things to many people.
For me, they will always be my first true design love.
Crush Magazine Bundaberg is a free quarterly publication for optimistic, intelligent locals who lead busy lives and care about what’s happening around them.
“Rowena started as our branding and masthead developer. It became clear very quickly that she possessed many other talents and was elevated to lead designer. We now consider her an integral part of the Crush team. Magazine production can be a logistical headache, but Rowena has helped us develop processes and procedures that ensure our communication and version control is as efficient and seamless as possible.
“A natural born creative collaborator, Rowena isn’t afraid of constructive feedback and proactively looks for ways to help us raise our game. It’s nice working with someone who’s as passionate about Crush as we are!”

I often hear, “Magazines are dead” when I tell people I am a magazine designer.
What’s actually dead is the old way of designing them, especially now that they’re competing with the internet’s immediacy. Thriving magazines today think outside the box. For print, this means considering paper quality, unique branding, and layout, plus integrating with online and social media presence. Digital magazines have evolved beyond simple PDFs, now incorporating video, animation, and interactivity, alongside essential accessibility and cross-platform considerations.
Brand You Magazine is a free quarterly digital magazine that I founded for female entrepreneurs and business owners. Along with being editor and designer I also run the connected podcast and blog.
“Doing business life together, cheering each other on.”
“Looks like it’s going to be a jam packed issue.”
“Women supporting others is really fantastic.”
“I like magazines. I love to look at a magazine. But the magazines have got to get better. Everything pushes someone else to get better. So the internet pushes the magazines.
